Ein Titel, der neugierig macht und je nach Vorbildung oder Suchmaschineneinsatz eine gewisse Erwartungshaltung setzt, hinsichtlich des Ausspruchs 'et in arcadia ego' beziehungsweise Arcadia insgesamt. Man findet etwas zu Gemälden und Texten, die mit dem Paradies, aber auch dem Tod zu tun haben. Ob die Autorin dem gerecht wird?
Die Schriftstellerin Julia wird durch einen mysteriösen, nächtlichen Telefonanruf mit dem oben genannten Ausspruch auf einen Mordfall aufmerksam, der vor einigen Jahren für Aufsehen sorgte. Eine Mutter hatte ihre beiden Kinder unter ungewöhnlichen Umständen getötet, wobei das Mädchen tatsächlich starb, der Sohn auf wundersame Weise schließlich doch überlebte. Da Julia gerade sowieso irgendwie nach einem Sinn in ihrem Leben sucht, recherchiert sie unter dem Vorwand weiter, einen Roman schreiben zu wollen. Nach kurzer Suche trifft sie Daniel, den überlebenden Jungen von damals, der als 16-jähriger andere Menschen nicht nur durch seine Begabung als Schauspieler verzaubert.
Daniel ist in der Obhut von Raymond, der mit seinem Reichtum Jugendlichen außerhalb der Gesellschaft ein Heim bietet. Julia trifft irgendwann auch auf Charles, einen Polizisten, den sie von früher in unangenehmer Erinnerung hat.
Die Ereignisse lassen die Hintergründe anfangs im Dunkeln, doch durch die zunehmende Nähe von Julia zu Daniel und Raymond, aber auch Charles entsteht eine spannungsgeladene Geschichte, die auch über das zurückliegende Verbrechen und Julias eigene Geschichte immer mehr eröffnet.
Die Einstufung als Thriller ist sehr treffend, die schnelle Folge und oftmals überraschenden Wendungen machen es schwer, das Buch aus der Hand zu legen. Zu viel will ich hier gar nicht verraten.
